The Musicians
The musicians play for the trees. Children dance on their stools while the wind sits still. Out the window it is a white year already. From whom shall we steal a new life? Fields glow a bright and dusty yellow from fallen sunshine, from pollinated rapeseed. Our legs were loaned by the wind. The moon was too thin, a glass pipe. At the borderheaven, the unwanted stare off into a desert distance. They no longer need a name for longing, no desire to call an absence by name. I misnamed the pigeon a dove, and the repercussion plummets from heaven. I do not know your neighbor. From her shopping bag fell two black piano keys and a chicken’s head. The fish longs to live in a lighter color of blue. We close the lips of the interloper with someone else’s laughter. The musicians fade to opened mouths.
The Wing
The durability of the wing is bizarre, the way it manifests in moving frames, multitudinous battements. The final image before the abyss will be the black wing’s black wind. Earth in ashes, as though it has consumed all color, elevates the flame to the wing like an ointment. The wing is desolate and deeply haunted by the flights of its innumerable others. But before we are permitted to view this agent of enduring and dynamic love, God liberates the idea of death and the mouth hangs askew in the fog, the new focus. Though obscured now, the duration of the wing is long. It catapults our minds into a thousand different crepuscules. Between the arctic cold and the man by the fire is a woman at home in her feathers, in a blood that courses through heights. Why are you sad about the snake, he asks her repeatedly, that agent of vice. You are emitting an aura of claustrophobia, and you never let God rest when the host is imminent. Until the break in your pinyons makes you fall, any landscape is your ether.
The Speaking Organ
He plowed the furrows right over the dead. In a distant place, how does the wolf create her name? The garden locks over the bodies like a muscle, humid and green, like the mouth that leaks divine commands, noncommunicable. In the time of ice, he reserves a measure of every crop grown, glowing corn, gold. Against the heart he wagers his impeccable records, weighs his number for each green apple, every ear of corn, even the stalk that fails to bear fruit. Nevertheless, what fallible organ is more patient than the heart? It continues beating as the God in autumn plucks each bloom from its blood-webbed paths, claims its candor for his own Truth. His clemency is variable, like the quality of the fruit. But since these were nourished by the flesh of the dead, and the intestines prove a profound interior terrain, they are lustrous, succulent. The only thing God anticipates in his immense hunger is subterranean, in the level he has himself condemned. The life he wants is underground, after all. Here he sits, alone with knife and fork. The wolf howls her satiating word from the distance.

Georg Amsel comes from Salzburg and conceives poetic ideas in an Austrian German from the late 1800s. His poems appear recently in ANMLY, Exchanges, Cagibi, Portland Review, and Passages North, among others, and his work “Komfort,” translated by Lake Angela as “Comfort,” is included in Best Literary Translations 2025 (Deep Vellum). His poetry seeks to disrupt the contemporary uses of language as much as its translations do.
Lake Angela is a body of water with tributaries in poetry and dance. Her latest book is Scivias Choreomaniae (Spuyten Duyvil, 2024), or “Know the Ways of the Dancing Madness,” a poetry collection on her work as a Mad dance therapist at a state psychiatric institution for others on the schizophrenia spectrum. Lake holds a PhD in Intersemiotic Translation and an MFA in Poetry and is a medieval mystic and nonhuman creature.
